American Philosophy and the Environment


The Summer Institute in American Philosophy is designed for faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students in philosophy and other disciplines interested in Pragmatism and American philosophy.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Kyle Powys White, Ph.D.


Kyle Whyte holds the Timnick Chair in the Humanities at Michigan State University. He is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Community Sustainability. His primary research in Indigenous philosophy addresses moral and political issues concerning climate policy and Indigenous peoples and the ethics of cooperative relationships between Indigenous peoples and climate science organizations. This research covers Indigenous philosophies of sustainability and resilience and connects with theoretical literatures on decolonization and Indigenous resurgence. He is an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Kyle is involved in a number of projects and organizations that advance Indigenous research methodologies, including the Climate and Traditional Knowledges Workgroup, Sustainable Development Institute of the College of Menominee Nation, Tribal Climate Camp, and Nga Pae o te Maramatanga New Zealand’s Maori Centre of Research Excellence. He is a former member of the U.S. Federal Advisory Committee on Climate Change and Natural Resource Science.

ON-CAMPUS LODGING


Housing for the conference will be available in the newly constructed Caldwell Apartments located at the intersection of Brown Street and Caldwell Street.

Caldwell Apartments was built in 2012 and is composed of five separate buildings. For the 2018 SIAP, comfortable accommodations will be provided in two of the five Caldwell buildings in 48 two-bedroom apartments.

Each apartment features:
  • Furnished living and dining room
  • Kitchen with all appliances including dishwasher
  • Two furnished bedrooms
    • Four twin beds
    • Four desks
    • Four desk chairs
    • Two closets per bedroom
    • Two bathrooms.
  • High-speed Internet connection and Wi-Fi.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS


A call for proposal abstracts for conference-style sessions is online. The summer institute welcomes papers and works-in-progress on American philosophy broadly construed. The deadline for submissions is March 30, 2018. For complete details on submissions see our website: Summer Institute in American Philosophy

GRADUATE STUDENT FUNDING


There are a limited number of graduate student travel stipends available. Priority will be given to graduates who are presenting their work for the first time at an SIAP event, although all attendees who request funding assistance will be considered. These grants cover the full cost of housing and registration. Students should indicate their desire to apply in their submission email. See the CFP. These grants are funded by the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy.
